COMING ATTRACTIONS

POCKET SANDWICH THEATRE’S 2009 SCHEDULE (ALMOST COMPLETE – ISN’T THAT REMARKABLE?)

“Zombie Dearest” by Joe Dickinson and Rodney Dobbs. The adventures of Dirk Spatula in the Zombie-ridden alleys of New Orleans’ French Quarter. January 2 through February 14

“Rumors” a farce-comedy by the Master of Comedy, Neil Simon. As the guests are about to arrive for a tenth wedding anniversary party, the husband (who happens to be the Deputy Mayor of New York) has just shot himself, and his wife is nowhere in sight. A story must be devised for The Press (with the politically correct “spin” attached, of course). As the confusions and miscommunications mount, the evening spins off into classic farcical hilarity. February 20 through March 28

“Captain Phantasm vs. The Nefarious Dr. Noir” by Chris “Buttercup” Irby and Sean “Country Music” Freeman. From the unashamed playwrights responsible for “Escape From Stalag 18,” comes what they call “a melodramatic serial in three acts.” (Which means, “yes, you can throw popcorn.”) April 3 through May 16.

“Death: The Musical” by Scott A. Eckert. Think "Ten Little Indians" meets "Noises Off"! Scott mixes up a hilarious potboiler, spiced with some hot jazz tunes and cool blues ballads. As he did with his critically acclaimed "Shakespeare For The Modern Man" plays and "A Poe Man's Christmas Carol," he takes a classic genre and serves it up with a new and exciting twist. May 23 through June 27.

First Specials Week:

July 3 – “The Dallas Doo-Wops,” a unique Dallas doo-wop vocal band, performing the most famous and popular Doo-Wop oldies tunes from the late Fifties and early Sixties. Always a sell-out show.

July 4 & 5 – Closed – we decided to just lay around the pool.

“Captain Blood: The Pirate Melodrama” by Joe Dickinson. Pirates seem to be coming back into style lately, so here are some more for you – but none of your modern sissy-pirates – our old-fashioned pirates are unafraid of such fearsome weapons as flintlocks, cutlasses, and popcorn. July 10 through August 22.

“Deathtrap” by Ira Levin – August 28 through September 26. An ingenious comedy/thriller from the author of “Rosemary’s Baby” and “The Stepford Wives.” One of the many critical raves about the play stated: “Two-thirds a thriller and one-third a devilishly clever comedy. Suspend your disbelief and be delighted. Scream a little. It’s good for you.” Directed by Cindee Mayfield, with some of the Pocket’s finest comic actors.

“The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde” by Joe Dickinson. The ultimate two-faced villain returns so that you can explore the weighty philosophical questions concerning good and evil, love and hate, buttered and unbuttered popcorn. (Yeah – it’s another popcorn-tosser. Our last of the year.) October 2 though November 14.

Second Specials Week – November 19 through November 22 – We have talked those great and legendary entertainers, “The Levee Singers,” into appearing on Friday, November 20, and another great special group, “The Dallas Doo Wops” on Saturday, November 21. The other dates are still To Be Determined.

And our final show of the year? (You already know the answer, don’t you?) Yes! “Ebenezer Scrooge” by Joe Dickinson and Laurie Tirmenstein. Our musical adaptation of Charles Dickens’ classic tale, “A Christmas Carol.” This will be its 28th consecutive year – somewhere along the way it seems to have become a tradition. November 27 through December 23 (with added shows).

A LITTLE BRAGGADOCIO:

We’re proud of the fact that we provide a venue for local writers. Many of our plays (especially the melodramas – yeah, the ones that turn Theatah Professors livid because the audience tosses popcorn at the actors) are by local playwrights, and we’re always interested in hearing about scripts in work or just gathering dust. We can only use a few a year, but we’re always glad to talk to you about them.
