Gustav Adolph Frederik Weckhorst was born September 25, 1860 in Fredrikstad, Norway, the oldest of the 10 children of Carl Gustav Marentius Weckhorst and his wife, Caroline Elisabeth (Schulze) Weckhorst. He married Anna Halvorsen (born 13 Oct 1859 in Bamble & died in 1948 in WA). They had 10 children all born in Bamble County (8 lived to majority). They had moved from Bamble to the town of Porsgrunn in 1906. They ran a store in Notodden, Norway (see below). He died November 29, 1919 in Kristiania (now Oslo), Norway.

syk og har vistnok ikke lang tid igjen hernede.

jeg har faaet forladelse for alle mine synder
og at jeg skal faa lov til at komme hjem til den

Weckhorst var født 1860 i Fredriksstad, søn av maskinmester
Weckhorst. Som ganske ung mand for Weckhorst tilsjøs, tok styrmandseksamen
med utmerkelse og seilte som styrmand. Hans sjømandsskap strakte sig over
hele 15 aar, han blev saaledes en vidt bereist mand. I 1885 kom han hjem fra
sjøen og tok arbeide hos det franske grubekompani paa Ødegaardens verk i
Bamble hvor han ble formand for mottagelse og avskibning av verkets varer.
Senere etablerte han sig som landhandler ved verket og drev som saadan i en
række aar. Han deltok ivrig i det kommunale liv i Bamble, var medlem av
herredsstyret og indehadde flere kommunale tillitshverv. I 1908 kom Weckhorst hit til Notodden og bygget hus og hjem her. Han eiet
et fond av virketrang og arbeidskraft, som han straks satte ind i arbeidet
for de mange opgaver som efterhvert meldte seg til løsning paa Notoden. Han
var medlem av Heddals herredstyre i den siste periode av fællesskapet, blev
invalgt som medlem av Notoddens første bystyre og formandsskap og indvalgtes
i 1916 igjen som medlem av bystyret. Han var viceordfører i det første aar
av det nu sittende bystyre. Han deltok ivrig i planerne om kanalisering av
Sauerelven, var stifter og første formand i Notodden huseierforening, fik
som saadan istand byens kinematograf, som han uten vederlag bestyrte for
foreningen, Notoddens teater er ogsaa et resultat av hans virksomhet. Weckhorst var en helt igjennem retlinjet karakter. Den sak som grep hans
interesse, viet han al sin kraft og glødende begeistring. Det som heter
kompromis, laa fjernt fra ham. Hans vei var like frem. Derfor faldt det ofte
i hans lod at støte paa motstand, og for motstand var han øm, men den egget
hans paagangskraft. Derfor stod det ogsaa ofte strid om hans navn. Han

Weckhorst was born 1860 in Fredrikstad, son of engineer Weckhorst. As young
man he went to sea, passed his mate examination with excellent marks and
sailed as mate. His seamanship covered a period of (hele) 15 years, thus he
became a widely traveled man. He came home from the sea in 1885 and went to work with the French mining
company at Ødegaardens mining mill in Bamble where he became foreman for
reception and shipment of products from the mining mill. Later on he
established himself as village shopkeeper at the mill and carried on as such
in a number of years. He participated eagerly in the local politics in
Bamble, was council member and held several municipal honorary posts. In 1908 came Weckhorst here to Notodden and built house and home here. He
possessed a
great wealth of energy and capacity for work, which he immediately brought
into action in the labor for the many tasks there gradually called for
solutions in Notodden. He was council member of Heddal administrative county
in the last period of community (with Notodden), was elected as council
member of Notodden's first town council and executive committee of the local
council. and was reelected in 1916 as council member. He was vice chairman
in the first year of the now sitting town council. He took part in the plans
about canalization of the Sauer river, he was the founder and first chairman
of Notodden homeowner's association, and as such he brought about the
establishment of the movie theater of the town, which he gratuitously
administered on behalf of the society, the Notodden Theater is also a
result of his activity. Weckhorst was a through and through straightforward character. The affair
which caught his interest, did he dedicate all his force and glowing
enthusiasm. His mind was far remote from what could be called compromises.
His way was the straight line. Thus, it often fell to his lot to encounter
opposition, and for opposition he was sensitive, but it stirred his go-ahead
spirit. Hence it was also often conflict around his name. He leaves behind his wife and 8 children, of which 4 are in America.
