Malinda Rupp was born in Jefferson, Wayne Co., Ohio, April 13, 1847. When nine years of age she moved with her parents to Missouri but only remained a short time when they settled permanently at Martinsville, Ill. She united with the Bethel (Church of God) in her early teens. She learned to spin, weave, knit and sew and became a most excellent cook and housekeeper.
Outside of church activities their chief social affairs consisted in making taffy at sugaring off time, apple paring, quilting and husking bees. She married Philip Shaffner who was also born in Ohio, but his grandparents lived on a plantation in Virginia. They owned many slaves, to whom they gave a certain amount of money, for conscience sake, liberated before the War, one of whom he discovered in Los Angeles in 1888 who knew more of the family history thatn he (Shaffner) did.
