John¹ McMuldrough The Elder

The first generation in the US....family tradition has it that John came from Ireland.

John¹ McMuldrough born after 1737 ₍₄₂₎ married Mary McLaughlin of Scotland_(*)(18). The family first appears in South Carolina in 1764 when John applies for a land grant for 250 acres on Black Creek _(**). It is thought they arrived in 1764 to Charleston from Belfast ₍₁₎. In the 1790 census, the household appears in Cheraw District, SC ₍₂₎. In the 1800 census, the household in Darlington County, SC ₍₁₂₎, and both John and his son, John are over age 45 ₍₁₂₎. While only son John² can be proved to be related to John¹. it seems he and Mary had 5 other sons: David, William, Hugh, James, and Andrew. The also had a daughter, Anne. John¹ married (second) Frances Orem Cusack, the widow of Adam Cusack who was a ferry boat operator and was apparently killed in the Revolution for refusing to cooperate with the British. John¹ and Frances went on to have 3 more children: Samuel, Martha, and Margaret.

 * Alternate Wife:
   Some lineage charts have John married to Agnes Hamilton(19)
   instead of Mary McLaughlin. But John Hamilton Muldrow of the 3rd generation
   married an Agnes, and this seems to be the source of the 'Agnes Hamilton'
   rumor.
