Register of Marriages and Baptisms by Cuthbertson R929.3 P4Zc p.83
ALLEGANY CO Monongahela Society
Rev. John Cuthbertson made his only recorded trip into Allegheny County and into Washington Coiunty in the fall of 1779, visiting the Society known as the Monogahela, distributed over a large area of country along the Monongahela and Youghiogheny Rivers, some twenty miles southeast of Pittsburgh, the central point of which was the Forks of the Yough. Perhaps the earliest settlement was in 1769, when James Wilson and his son Zaccheus left the Cover Mountain, east of the Alleghenies, and settled in this vicinity, moving to the Forks of the Yough the following year, accompanied by Robert McConnell. They were soon joined by the families of Robert and Matthew Jamison; Andrew McMeans Matthew Mitchell.

one family in the PA area...Mar 2002

Descendants of John McMeins

Note: The family name was spelled McMeins, McMeans, McMains, McMeen.

Background: Family 'history' says that there was supposed to have been six bros, that came from Ireland. John was supposed to have been the father to Andrew (who becomes generation #2). Andrew had a wife, Anne who had the family Bible. In addition to listing Andrew's birthyear of 1740, the bible also lists a young son that died in 1780. A Robert is listed as living in the Forks, PA & married a Shaw & moved west. Bible info from the Wilson family tree by Mrs J. Ralph Wilson, Louisa Publishing Co 1956.

John1 McMeins. He is listed as the father of Andrew in the family Bible.

Andrew2 McMeins (also found "McMeans") was b. Bethesda, Maryland in 1740 (according to wife Anne's Bible). (Perhaps Charles McMeans (of Cecil Co, MD above) was a bro. to Andrew?). He married Anne Wilson of Maryland, they were married in 1762 in Landcaster Co. PA. They owned a farm in Franklin Co Pa. & sold it in 1778. They went to KY & Andrew purchased land at Floyds Fork & Salt River. He helped build Fort Jefferson which is now Wickliff, KY. He died there in 1780. Anne returned to PA with her children. Ann re-married a Jamerson. Note: Genforum has "Andrew McMeans 1740", by Jan Baker 2002. She listed a copy of Anne's narritive written in 1827.

Thier children were (all b. in PA):
   i. Mary3
ii. James b. 1771. He went to NC, TN, KY & MO in 1818. He seems to be
the one in Cecil Co, MD in 1790. He is NOT in the 1810 PA Census
and may be the one rumored to have gone to NC.
 iii. John
iv. Jane. She married an Aikin.
   v. Robert. He died in 1780 (as a child) in KY in the Rev. War.
(He did not die as a child in 1789 on the Mississippi river, This was an
       error. --Wayne McMeins)

James3 (Andrew2, John1), b.1771 in PA. He went to NC, TN, KY & MO in 1818.

Children:
   i. John4, went to AR.
ii. David died in St. Louis.
iii. Alexander had a wife & several children. He m(2) Elizabeth Dale Johnson.

Alexander4 (James3, Andrew2, John1) had a wife and several children. His wife must have died because he married Elizabeth Dale Johnson in Adams Co, IL in 1836. They were in the 1840 Adams Co. Census. Family tradition holds that Alexander died before son Milton was three (~1849) somewhere in IL. Alexander is not in the 1850 Brown Co., IL Census. Elizabeth died in June 1859. In the 1860 Brown Co.,IL Census, Mary Emily, Lewis & Milton were living with thier bro. William. (Alexander may have had a nephew or son, John who was a mex war vet. John enlisted in St Claire Co, IL (East St Louis). John died in Brown Co, IL abt 1868 & is buried in Bell-Keith Cem., Brown Co., IL. He can be found on family search on the web, he was not born in NY)

Children of Alexander:
   i. Lewis5, b. in IA in 1844. He died in civil war in GA in 1865.
       (no other info).
ii. Milton, b. 1844 in Handcock Co., IL. He died in
1828 in Bates Co., MO. His death cert. lists parents "unknown".
iii. Mary Emily, m. Thomas Lewis. She d. in Brown Co. in 1928.
Her death cert. lists Alexander & Elizabeth as parents.
  iv. William, d.~1881.
