Samuel B. McManus that died in 1877. And he is the one
listed in 1860.

Was trying to figure who was where in the James McManus, Anson County, North
Carolina line....
Am I corrected on the children of James and Mary Rollings McManus
1- Hugh
2- Charles
3- Steve ?

I see the South Carolina Census shows in 1800

McManus, Charles Co. Lancaster, Roll No.: 50, Page No.: 17
McManus, George County: Lancaster, Roll No.: 50, Page No.: 17

Who is George McManus?

----1810 South Carolina------

McManus, Ann Co. Lancaster, Roll No.: 61, Page No.: 6
McManus, Archibald Co. Lancaster, Roll No.: 61, Page No.: 6
McManus, Charles Co. Lancaster, Roll No.: 61, Page No.: 7
McManus, Hugh Co. Chesterfield, Roll No.: 60, Page No.: 289

Is Charles and Hugh the sons of James?
Who is Archibald?
Who is Ann?

Also am I to understand that what use to be in Anson County North Carolina
ended up in Chesterfield South Carolina?
Note that the McManus' are listed here...

Anson County, North Carolina

Research in the neighboring counties of Chesterfield County is very
important to the family researcher whose ancestry lived in Chesterfield
County, as many of its inhabitants relocated from them. It has been said
that a majority of the Chesterfield County families lived in Anson County,
North Carolina, prior to relocation. Anson County was created out of Bladen
County in 1750, and it was around this time that Chesterfield County was
being settled along the state line. Ephraim Liles and Ephraim Horn are
credited with being the first settlers in Anson; Ephraim Horn, however,
resided on the Chesterfield County side of the state line. Also during this
period, Governor Dobbs of North Carolina, granted great portions of land
that was, in reality, in current day Chesterfield County. The Jacksons,
McManus', Islers, Henleys, Bailees, Fenners, Bectons, Spaights, Waddells,
Rushings, Carters, and Jenkins' are families that received land grants in
this manner. Therefore, some land transactions and wills may be found in
Anson County, North Carolina, for families that resided in Chesterfield
County, South Carolina.

Figured if I can't find my McManus line and someday I know we will find he
is connected here somehow I will at least know the some of the McManus'
from North and South Carolina hopefully.

Was wondering if you have a resource to look up these names in any year
after 1860 in Marengo County, Alabama or Clarke County Alabama?

What I am looking for is county in Sc that parents might have been born in ?

Date on Samuel B. McManus's tombstone says he
died June 17, 1877. I am not so sure that the Samuel McManus found in 1850
Marengo is the same Samuel B. found in Clarke Co. 1860.If you note
birthdates, the samuel in hudson household was born 1830 and my Samuel B. in
1860 was born 1832...
Other things of interest that we are researching are as follows:
One is the Rueben H Hudson census listing.. I can not find the grave of
rueben hudson but did find a grave listing for a richard H. Hudson who was
same age as rueben, which also had a grave for a rebecca hudson but
no dates listed for her. ( according to catherine Mcmanus Massey's will in
south carolina we think maybe reuben's name is listed wrong and this is
richard H hudson in the 1850 listing) still trying to find the hudson link
back in sc as I am hoping that will help place samuel..
I just copied what I have in my file and hope that you can make something of
it all. Alot is just thoughts to come back to and all..
I am also going to forward you some research thougth that I have shared with
another researcher on hudsons/ harpers..

According to the 1850 Marengo Co. census, There is a Samuel McManus that
was born in South Carolina. He is found living with a Reuben and Rebecca
Hudson, also from S. C. Another researcher can not place rebecca as a
sister of any samuel McManus from south carolina ( could be his aunt ) In
1860, there is a Samuel B.McManus and Sarah found in 1860 Clarke Co. and
it also has him as born in SC. He served in Co D of the 38th Regiment of
the Alabama Volunteers (CSA). His grave marker at Choctaw Corner is a CSA
marker. Sarah filed for a Confederate pension. . Most of Saml B. immediate
family was buried at Arbor Cemetery. Some are also buried at Wesley Chapel.
The Samuel found in Clarke County is my ggggrandfather for sure. I am still
researching how and where he fits into the Hudson family, descendants of
James McManus (lancaster sc, anson nc) branch..
Samuel paid cash for land on 3/1/1859 in Clarke County. His neighbors listed
in the 1860 Census are Joseph W. Hudson ( wife is Margaret S Harper) and
Mathew Harper ( brother of Margaret ). The harper were from antrim Ireland ,
while Joseph hudson and Mathew Harper's wife (Sarah M) were from South
Carolina.)

Samuel B. McManus is buried in Cemetery near Hudson, J. S. (James Sidney
)and his wife Virgina. And also Harrison, Lafayette and his wife Ruth
Dicks. Sarah was buried in Marengo County when she died August 06, 1911.

St Stephens, Demopolis and Cahaba are the Alabama Land offices
that registered land patents the areas each office covered changed
over the years. Demopolis - first entry made July 15 1833, St Stephens
opened Dec 24, 1806, Cahaba was originally at Milledgeville, GA
and moved to Cahaba and opened Oct 20, 1818. The areas covered
by the various offices changed from time to time as did the Alabama
county borders. Therefor land now in Clarke CO, AL could have
been in Monroe and part of Dallas and Monroe made up Wilcox
Co., AL. In order to fully understand the dynamics of the above
land transactions each needs to be plotted to determine in which
county they were when granted and where they now lie and what
was the disposition of these lands.

St Stephens is in Washington County Alabama, close to clarke county where
samuel b mcmanus was listed in 1860 census.....

>From another researcher " land is in Clarke County. St. Stephens is the
"meridian" upon which the land records were based. That meridian is common
to early land records in Ala and Miss. Go to the General Land Office
Records, Bureau of Land Management, "

Figured that they must have shopped and travelled to st stephens since it
was close and a larger place....

Now located in the southwestern part of Alabama, Washington County is
bounded by Choctaw County to the north, the Tombigbee River to the east,
across which lie Clarke and Baldwin Counties, by Mobile County to the South
and by the State of Mississippi to the West. The County Seat is located at
Chatom. If I remember my visits in Demopolis with my aunt and uncle,
Demopolis is also located along the Tombigbee River...

In a 1837 newspaper in the New Bern area of NC is mention of a Samuel
McManus who apparently donated some money for a person to some church . . .
It is a very tiny little blurb and I can't for the life of e figure out
where he fits, if at all. I notice on my SC ap that MarionCo. is a little
south of Darlington. Way back in the beginning of the 1800s this was
Darlington Dist (I THINK) or close to it where
Darlington Co is. Wonder if Marion has any McManus stuff? I have never

Hi Barbara:
I have searched in Marion District and can not find McManus's there at all
so maybe is just the Hudson / Harpers that migrated from there. And who
knows as I have not really connect the R. H. Hudson back to a family with
census data seems strange that his and Rebecca's children are not listed in
marriage records in Marengo, Wilcox or Clarke at least online… So will keep
searching for that family more. What I do find is that I think there is more
clues to put Samuel with this family since we find him connected in Alabama
with her in laws

Reasons he might be John Hugh McManus's son:
  1) B could have been misread as an F
  2) The date could be 1831 not 1837
  3) He and Rebecca are close in age so it is possible the were raised
together giving Samuel a strong reason to move with her.
  4) Samuel B. McManus named his children after A: Sarah Catherine B: Mary

           Sweetwater Alabama)'s Brother .
         5 Samuel F McManus b. 1837 ( This is the Samuel B. McManus
that may be my ggg grandfather in Marengo and Clarke Co. Alabama)( Could
              date possibly be 1831???
         5 Uriah Amon McManus b. 6 Jun 1847 d. 17 Apr 1935 m. 10 Jan

4 Rebecca McManus ( Married R. H. Hudson of Marengo County, Alabama) Census
shows date of birth as 1831

Thought: Samuel B's and Rebecca's years of birth are close ( ca. 1831)
So possible that they grew up together giving a reason why he would have
moved with her to Alabama.
