THE FISH FAMILIES


  This family came to Beekman by 1743 and remained through the end of the
century.  The emigrant was THOMAS FISH who was baptized at Market
Harborough, Great Bowden, Leicestershire, England 1 Jan. 1618/19. He m.
Mary _______ (poss. Soule) and he died at Portsmouth, RI in Dec. 16871. His
widow wrote her will 9 Sept. 1697 at Portsmouth,RI, added a codicil 12 July
1699, and the will was proved 9 Aug. 1699.  She mentioned sons John Fish,
Robert Fish, Thomas Fish dec'd, and Daniel Fish. She then named daughters
Mehitable Tripp, Mary Brayton, & Alice Knowles. She also mentioned
grandson Preserved Fish, and granddaughter Mehitable Fish, children of son
Thomas dec'd; grandson Thomas Fish, son of son Daniel Fish, & grand-
daughters Comfort Fish & Ruth Fish, daughters of son Daniel Fish, plus,
grand-daughter Mary Fish under 16, daughter of son John Fish, and grandson
Robert Fish, son of son Robert Fish.
   Thomas#72 and Mary _____ Fish had seven children all born at Portsmouth.

1. THOMAS2 FISH#94, (Thomas1), was born ca. 1649 in Portsmouth and m. 10
Dec. 1668, Grizzel, dau. of John and Alice Strange at Portsmouth. He died at
Portsmouth ca. 1684 and his father, who was still alive, deeded his dwelling
and fifteen acres to his son Preserved.

2. JOHN2 FISH #98, (Thomas1), was born ca. 1657 at Portsmouth and died close to
1742, age about 85 at Dartmouth, RI where he lived most of his life. He
married Joanna ________. The inventory of his estate amounted to 721 pounds/1/1.

3. PRESERVED3 FISH #104, (Thomas2-1), was born 12 Aug. 1679 at Portsmouth
and m. there 30 May 1699 Ruth, dau. of John and Ruth (Shaw) Cook of
Tiverton, RI. He probably became a Quaker and died at Portsmouth 15 July
1745 and Ruth died 13 April 1775, age 93. On 1 Aug. 1737 he, John Howland,
James Howland and James Tripp, yeomen of Dartmouth, were named executors
to the will of John Cook of Tiverton7. Preserved Fish, cordwainer, wrote his

will 2 June 1738 and it was probated 12 Aug. 1745. He mentioned his wife
Ruth Fish; sons Thomas Fish eldest, John Fish 2nd oldest, Preserved Fish 3rd
oldest, & Benjamin fish 4th and youngest.  He then named three daughters;
Grizzel wife of John Shearman, Ruth wife of Benjamin Shearman, & Amie
wife of James Akin. [RIGR 11:86].
   His widow wrote her will at Portsmouth 22 June 1762 and it was proved 20
April 1775. She mentioned sons Thomas, Benjamin, John and Preserved Fish
and daus. Grizel Shearman, Ruth Shearman and Amie Akin who had unnamed
children under 18 and 21 years of age.  she then named son John's two daus.
Phebe Stanton and Ruth Sisson and also mentioned gr.-dau. Ruth Shearman of
Dartmouth and Preserved Fish, son of son Benjamin.8

           Matthew and Phebe Allen, and 2nd 5 Sep 1745, Esther Shrieve,
           both at Portsmouth,RI.  John and Mary had four children
           recorded at Portsmouth and by Esther he had five recorded same.
      vii. Preserved #112, b.19 May 1713; m.Elizabeth Slocum 9 July 1735. He
           had two daus. and died Feb. 1813, age 99.
      viii.Benjamin #113, b. 14 April 1716; m. 1st Priscilla Arthur 2 Nov 1739
           and 2nd 2 April 1776, Mrs. Patience Sisson. He had son Preserved
           per his mother's will. 10

4. JOHN3 FISH #518, (John2, Thomas1), was born 14 Jan 1707/8 at Dartmouth and
m. there Remember Youin (possibly Yeomans?) 29 Jan 1729. He appears11 to
have married 2nd Thankful _________, possibly Thankful, b.24 Aug. 1722, dau. of
Jedediah Irish of Beekman.  He was probably the John Fish taxed in Beekman
from Feb. 1743/44 through 1759 when the listing became "sons and farm." He
was assessed in Beekman in Feb. 1743/4 at 2 pounds, in Feb. 1744/5 at 3 pounds, in Feb.
1753 at 8 pounds and in June 1758 at 7 pounds. He was of the Oblong on 15 March 1745
