when he conveyed his land at Dartmoouth to John Fisher, a weaver, most likely
his brother-in-law. John Fish of Beekman bought 335 acres in the Nine
Partners 21 Aug. 1753 from Caleb Outwater and his wife Margaret. The land
was in lot 20, subdivision 4. Fish paid 90 pounds for the land and sold it for 200 pounds to
Jacob Cronkhite in 1760, probably without living on it. [D4:107, 108]. He was
probably the John Fish of Charlotte Precinct who sold 244 acres of land 14
March 1767 to Ichabod White. He retained land to the east of the parcel
conveyed and Levi Fish was a witness.12 He was a witness for a land sale in lot
18 on 12 Nov. 1764. [D 4:316]. He was most likely the John Fish who sold
land with widow Rachel Fish on 26 July 1766 to the heirs of his son Joshua
Fish. John and Thankful Fish apparently signed the deed. [D 5:37]. He sold
land to his son Seth in 1765. he was probably the man taxed in Crum Elbow
and Charlotte 'at Cold Spring' from Feb. 1760 through 1779.13

ii. Seth #548, b.15 March 1734 at Dartmouth. Seth Fish was a customer
at the Merritt store on Quaker Hill, Pawling in 1767 and 1769 and
Abraham Slocum was on his account.14 On March 30,1775 Seth
Fish of Charlotte, DC cordwainer, and his wife Mary sold to Evans
Dean, farmer, 99 acres in lot 18. The land was described as:
"which Benjamin Boyce bought of Joseph Mott. North part of
land Boyce sold to John Fish and John Fish sold to Seth Fish.
Bounds Eliphaz Fish, William Cash, Jonas Parks, Hannah Jewel
and Jonathan Parks." Cost was 340 pounds. [D 7:302]. Mortgage 3:286,
dated 12 Oct. 1773 is from Seth Fish, yeoman of Great Nine
Partners, to William Stevens, yeoman of Pawling Precinct for
100 pounds for land that Seth Fish purchased 30 Oct 1765 from John
Fish. He married Mary _____. Seth Fish was taxed iun Crum Elbow
from June 1755 to June 1766, then 'farm' to 1772, then 'farm' off
to 1777 and in 1778 Evans Dean's name was on the list. He was
not listed in NYS in 1790.

vi. ?Levi.16 Levi Fish was taxed in Charlotte Precinct from 1771
through 1779. He witnessed two deeds in Crum Elbow in 1767,
1769. [D 5:368, 13:163]. He was in Saratoga in 1790 at 1-2-6
between Caleb Fish and Melchert Hatchet and in 1800 he was
in Stillwater at 0-0-1-0-1 and 0-2-1-0-1 between Obediah
Tompkins and William Cole. He was 16 away from Eliphaz Fish
Sr. on the list. Levi Fish, Levi Fish 2nd, Samuel Fish, Oatman
Fish, Almira Fish and Stephen A. Fish were founding members of
the Free-Will Baptist Church at Putnam, Washington Co., NY in
1823.17 Betty Fish, consort of Levi Fish, died 5 Sept. 1823, age
73y 17 days and was buried in St. John's Cemetary at Greenfield,
Saratoga Co., NY. Mrs. Joanna Fish, wife of Stephen Fish, died in
Putney Village (Wayne Co.,NY) 4 Jan 1820 age 65. Stephen
Fish died 10 March 1827 in Williamson, Wayne Co., age 80.18
Levi Fish was in Putnam Town, Washington Co. in 1825 with 3
males, 4 females, 1 males subject to Military duty aged 18-45, 1
male qualified to vote, 1 married female under age 45 and 3
unmarried females under age 16. He was on the roll between
Thomas Carleton and Josiah Clark. Samuel and Stephen Fish
were within 5 on the list. Samuel Fish was listed with 8 males, 5
females, 2 males subject to Military duty, 2 males eligible to vote,
1 married female under age 45, 4 unmarried females under age
16. One marriage had occurred the previous year and there had
been one female birth the preceeding year. Samuel Fish was
between Josiah Clark and Josiah Clark Jr. Stephen Fish was on
the roll with 6 males, 6 females, 1 male subject to Military duty
and eligible to vote. There was 1 married female under age 45, 2
unmarried females age 16-45, 3 unmarried females under age 16,
and one female birth the preceeding year. Stephen Fish was on the
roll between Josiah Clark Jr. and James Stewart.

16There are few records for men of this name. A Levi Fish, son of Lemeul and Martha
(Coleman) Fish was born ca. 1755 at Sandwich, Barnstable Co., MA but he would
appear to be too young to be taxed in 1771. We have therefore assigned him to John
Fish.

Records and Lines, Vol. I, p.8 has a record of the children of Stephen and Hannah Fish
who took a removal from Rensselaerville to Middleton, Colombiana Co., OH 25 Sept.
1817. The six children were born 1804 to 1820 and therefore were the generation after
the Stephen who died 1820.
5. THOMAS4 (#108) FISH, (Preserved3, Thomas2-1, was born at Portsmouth,
Newport Co., RI 1 Dec. 1703 and married 16 December 1724 Mercy, daughter
of John and Mary (Stanton) Coggeshall of Newport, RI. She was born 27
December 1704 and died 10 February 1778 at Amenia,DC.
He had nine children, the first eight were born at Dartmouth, MA and the last
in Beekman. He was taxed in Beekman from 1743 through June 1763 and was
assessed at 1 pound in Feb. 1743/44, at 3 pounds the next year, at 4 pounds in Feb. 1747/8 and
June 1748, at 6 pounds in Feb. 1753, at 2 pounds in 1756, at 4 pounds in 1758, at 3 pounds in 1760 and
at 5 pounds in June 1763. he was a witness to a deed 17 Dec. 1744 for land in the
Oblong, [D 2:374], and was listed as living next to Philip Allen on a road
description of 17 March 1746/7. In Jan. 1761 Thomas Fish was on a farm of
87 acres, 3 rods and 13 perches in lot 29 of the Oblong with a quit-rent of
3 pounds/18/1. On 24 May 1763 Thomas Fish and Joseph Holway posted appearance
bonds for Sarah Holway of Pawling. Fish and Joseph Holway in 20 pounds and Sarah
Holway for 40 pounds. Sarah was ordered to keep the peace towards Sarah Sheldon.
[AD 4621]. He kept an active account at the Mabblet store in Washington
Precinct from 1761-63 and Ruth Crandall, _____ Castle, Christian Soule, James
Vagh (sic), _______ Ellitt, ________ Renno, Seth Cook and ______ Gardner dealt with
him.19
He was tax collector in Beekman Precinct in 1744, an assessot in 1748 and
1753. he was paid 6s for his service in 1748 and received 11s in 1753. He was
a Constable in Beekman from 1760 through 1762 and was an Ensign in the
early Colonial Militia in DC in 1746. He was mentioned in a letter from Henry
Beekman to Henry Livingston 3 Dec 1745.20
His wife Mercy Fish was the head of a family in the 1761 list of Friends at the
Oblong.21 He removed to Amenia where he was taxed from 1765 through 1777
and died there about 1786. Thomas Fish of Amenia conveyed to son Joshua
Fish of Albancy Co. 12 Jan 1785 for "love and affection + 5 shillings" 1/2 the
farm on the north side of lot 36. [D 9:163]. Thomas, Joshua, and John Fish
were all witnesses to the will of Abraham Bockee of Amenia dated 11 Jan.
1769. [WN-YHS 12:346]. The will of Thomas Fish of Amenia was written 30
December 1786 and proved 8 Feb. 1787. He gave personal estate to 2nd wife
Maryann. The will was witnessed by Jonathan Deuel, Jacob Bockee, John
MacDonald, Gabriel Duzenbury and Joseph Ter Bush. It was a non-cupative

6. THOMAS4 FISH #547, (John3-2, Thomas1), was born 12 June 1732 at Dart-
mouth and came with his father to Dutchess where he was taxed in Crum
Elbow/Charlotte as Thomas Fish Jr. from June 1759 through 1773, farm. He
was a witness to a mortgage in Charlotte 12 Sept. 1763 and on March 1769
Thomas Fish of Charlotte sold 170 acres of land to Jonathan Parks of Beekman.
The land was in lot 18 of the Nine Partners and bounded the children of Joshua
Fish and Valentine Perkins. The sale price was 400 pounds and Jonas Parks and Levi
Fish were witnesses. [M 1:285, D 5:369]. The ear mark of Azariah Newcomb
of Crum Elbow was transferred to Thomas Fish of same 7 Sept. 1765. [CEPR
13]. He was involved in several legal actions: Thomas Fish sued John Crego
and Crego was ordered to pay 13 pounds. [CP May 1764]. Thomas Fish sued Martin
Armstrong in 1762 and 1763. [CP May 1762 and May 1763]. In Oct. 1762 and
May 1764 he was sued by the Colony. In 1762 Weston Allen was bound with
him.26
