Bradford & Backus Families

Wlliam Bradford was baptized March 19, 1590 in Austerfield, England. He was a young man about age 30 when he sailed with William Brewster on "The Mayflower" which arrived in the new world in 1620. He had spent many years practically a son to William Brewster, living with the Brewsters as a lad of early teen years, escaping with them to Leyden, Holland, where he later married. Many of the others on The Mayflower were families who had escaped to Holland from England because of their Separatist beliefs. Among them were a family named Southworth. Edward Southworth and his wife Alice had two boys, Constant and Thomas. Edward got sick in Holland and had to return to England where he died. In the meantime, The Mayflower set sail. Soon after their arrival, Wlliam Bradford's wife fell overboard and drowned while William was on a scouting party looking for a spot for a settlement. He learned much from his friend and mentor William Brewster -- and he was chosen governor of the new colony. He was lonely without his wife. Two years later Alice Carpenter Southworth arrived with her two sons. Bradford had had word that Edward Southworth had died -- so he had written to Alice to come and marry him. They had been old friends in Leyden. Alice arrived on "the Anne" in 1623. They were married August 14th 1623 in Plymouth. William died May 9, 1657 in Plymouth. Alice died March 26th, 1970 in Plymouth.
