Lounsbury; d. in Macedon, Wayne Co, NY, Mar 29, 1822.
Was the ancestor of an illustrious group of men who have contributed
much on the fields of education, engineering and music.
(He was 33 on the death of Patrick Henry (1736-1799), a contemporary
of President Washington.

The following records concerning Elias Hicks9 Fish and his
descendants down to Janet Lounsbury12 Fish, B.S., were compiled

192 ELIAS HICKS9 FISH (Job8, Joshua7, Thomas6, Preserved5,
Thomas4, Thomas3, Alice2, John1), fuller and farmer, first son of
(149) Job and Rachel (Lounsbury) Fish, was b. Mar 19, 1792,
at Schaghticoke, Rensselaer Co, NY; d. May 9, 1867, at Burr
Oak, Mich. Of Quaker descent on both sides, he was named for
Elias Hicks, then famous minister of the Society of Friends, who
later lost the admiration of little Elias's parents by decamping
from the Society under the new banner of Hicksites. He learned
the fuller's trade, but followed farming. He owned farms successively
in Macedon, Wayne Co, NY, 1816-26; Hartland,
Niagara Co., NY 1827-36; Auburn, Geauga Co, Ohio. 1836-52;

Florence, Erie Co., Ohio, 1852-64; Burr Oak, St. Joseph Co.,
Mich., 1864-67.
On July 31, 1813, he m. Betsy Van Wagner, dau. of Nicholas
Evart and Katherine (Grant) Van Wagner of Pleasant Valley,
N.Y., who was b. May 31, 1795, and d. July 6, 1886, aged 91,
at Burr Oak. Six sons and four daus. were b. to them.

Sep 26, 1818, at Macedon, Wayne Co., N.Y.; d. Mar 26,
1903, at Cleveland, Ohio. Attended Kenyon College, and studied
law in Cleveland. Taught school in Geauga Co., Ohio, and in
Cleveland, practiced law from about 1843 in Cleveland, attaining
special eminence in admiralty law. He was a member of the
Baptist Church. He was a strong man, physically and mentally,
and had the love and admiration of his numerous kin, including
nephews and nieces. In 1843 he m. Susan Morris Stewart, dau.
of __________ Stewart of Cleveland, and had: (208) Mary11, b.1855,
d. 1855; and (209) Charles, b. Aug. 11, 1860.

composer, only son of (200) Charles L. and Susan Morris (Stewart)
Fish, was b. Aug 11, 1860, at Cleveland, Ohio. He was
author of words and music of several published songs, conducted
many enterprises, and devoted many of his earlier years to the

stage. He m. Cornelia Patterson of Cleveland, and had: (209 1/2)
Julia C.12 who was in 1941 second vice-president general of the
National Society of New England Women.

and Betsey (Van Wagner) Fish, was b. Sept 10, 1824, at Macedon,
Wayne Co, NY; d. June 8, 1902, age 77, at Greenville,
Montcalm Co, Mich. He studied medicine in Willoughby, Ohio,
and in New York City, and taught school in Geauga Co, Ohio,
before and while studying medicine. He practiced medicine in
Willoughby, 1851; in Otisco, Ionia Co, Mich., 1852-69; and in
Greenville 1869-1902. About 1850 he m. Mary Gurney, dau. of
Zenas and Sophronia (Macomber) Gurney of Mulberry Corners,
Geauga Co. She was b. about 1827; d. Mar 9, 1890, in Greenville.
Child: (210) Mary Emily11, b. July 31, 1853.
210 MARY EMILY 11 FISH, A.B., dau. of (202) Elias and Mary
(Gurney) Fish, was b. July 31, 1853, at Otisco, Ionia Co., Mich;
d. June 7, 1928, age 74, at Greenville, Mich.; unm. She attended
Oberlin College Conservatory of Music, 1873-74, and grad.
from Chicago School of Music. Grad. from Univ. of Mich. 1893;
and from Mrs. Noble's Detroit School of Literature and Elocution
1896. She was Principal of Greenville High School, 1879-91
and 1895-1928, teaching literature, history, French, vocal music
and oratory. She was the moving spirit and active promoter of
local musical, dramatic and other functions. Her unbounded
energy and enthusiasm, and keen interest in people, especially
the pupils, won the hearts of all. In token of their debt to her,
former pupils induced her to spend the summer of 1910 in Europe
at their expense. The year before her death she initiated and
directed a Commencement celebration to which her former
pupils flocked from all parts of the world. She was a member of
the Greenville Congregational Church and active in all its organizations.

H. and Betsey (Van Wagner) Fish, was b. Mar 17, 1828, at
Hartland, Niagara Co., N.Y.; d. Feb 27, 1923, aged 94, at La
grange, Ill. In 1845 he took an active part in a debating society
that attracted to membership many men from the local districts,
and as a lad was a champion wrestler of these districts. He contributed
numerous articles to newspapers of Clevelnad and

Columbus, Ohio, and Buffalo, NY, 1848-54, and studied law
in the office of his brother Charles the summers of 1850 and 1851.
He attended Chester Acad., Geauga Co., Ohio, 1845-46,
Western Reserve Seminary for Teachers, Kirkland, Ohio, 1846-47,
and taught schools in Geauga Co., 1845-54, and in Erie Co.,
1855-98. During his teaching career he was County Examiner of
Teachers in Geauga Co., 1851-54; and in Erie Co., 1857-64 and
1881-91. He was instructor in nine County Teachers' Institutes
in Geauga and Erie counties, between 1853 and 1880, and conducted
an annual two-weeks "Teachers Class" in Erie Co.,
1859-80. For his last fifty years he lived near Florence in Erie Co.
after his fiftieth year, he learned by himself to read French,
German and Spanish, and after his eightieth year Dutch, and
became almost as familiar with French and German literature as
that of his own tongue. His greatest interest was in human
beings. He had an exceptional memory and sense of humor, and
foun great joy sharing his learning and his love of the beautiful
in nature and literature. He drew forth the best from his
pupils; and without exception they have remembered him as
thier inspiring friend, and always with gratitude and affection.

Auburn, Geauga Co., he m. there, MAy 2, 1853, Anne Elizabeth
Peabody, dau. of George Alvin and Ann (Spencer) Peabody.
She was b. Aug. 8, 1834, in Newport, RI, and d. Apr 5, 1904,
at Florence, Ohio. They were married 51 years.

she grad. B.L., 1897. She also attended summer sessions at
Univ. of Mich., 1898; Harvard Univ., 1900; Univ. of Wis., 1906.
She taught district schools and gave private music lessons in Erie
and Huron counties, Ohio, 1872-82. Taught in Toledo, Ohio,
schools, 1882-84; Austin, Ill., 1884-85; Gale College, Galesville,
Wis., 1888-93. Prof. of English, Western College for
Women, Oxford, Ohio, 1897-1915 (on leave, 1908-09). Traveled
in Scotland, England, Germany and France, summer of 1911; in
California 1919-20, 1925-29, and since 1931.
223 LIEUT. WILLISTON11 FISH (Job9, Elias9, Job8, Joshua7,

author, lawyer, traction executive, son of (203) Job and Anne
Elizabeth (Peabody) fish, was b. Jan 15, 1858, at Berlin Heights,
Erie Co., Ohio; d. Dec 19, 1939, aged 81, at Western Springs,
Ill. He taught school in Erie Co. during the winters of 1874-77.
In 1876 he attended Oberlin College, for which he prepared himself
in Greek and Latin without a teacher. He entered the U.S.
Military Academy at West Pointin June 1877; on graduation
in 1881 was comissioned Second Lieut. and assigned to the
Fourth Artillery. Later he studied law on the side, and was admitted
to the Illinois Bar in 1897.
He was stationed two months in 1881 at Fort Point, San Francisco,
Calif; 1881-85, at Fort Trumbellk, New London, Conn,;
and 1885-87, at Fort Snelling, Minneapolis, Minn., where on
Oct 5, 1887, he was promoted to First Lieut. He resigned his
commission Dec 31, 1887, to enter business. He was salesman,
Crane Elevator Co., Chicago, 1888-89; member of real estate
firm of Cameron & Fish, Chicago, 1889-90; assistant to president,
and atty. South Chicago City Railway Co., 1890-99; assistant to
general counsel, Chicago Union Traction Co., 1899-1908; assistant
to president, Chicago Railways Co., 1908-12; vice president and
general manager, Chicago Railways Co. 1912-14; vice president
and general manager, West Pennsylvania Railways Co., Pittsburgh,
1914-20; and general manager, Chicago Surface Lines,
1920-23. On retiring from the traction business, he built a number
of houses in Western Springs, the rental and maintenance
of which occupied a part f his time thereafter.
He was the author of "Won at West Point" (McNally, Chicago,
1884) and "Short Rations" (Harper, New York, 1900). He
wrote "A Last Will," which appeared in "Harper's Weekly"
in 1898, and since then has been continually reappearing--often
