THE FISH FAMILIES IN AMERICA 401a
3066 Benjamin Cobourn Fish, (Cobourn also spelled Colburn) born Dec. 23, 1821
in Andover, MA, m. Ellen M. Kimball (also Helen Kemball in some records), the dau. of
Abraham and Mahala (Mitchell) Kimball. Benjamin and Ellen were m. in Douglas, MA,
May 10, 1860 (other records say they were m. in Burrillville, RI Dec. 13, 1860).
Ben died in North Smithfield, RI of congestion of the lungs, Mar 20, 1886.
He was buried in an unmarked grave, near a giant tree overlooking Fish Pond,
which is across the road, along Mowry Road in Harrisville, RI. This used to
be his favorite place to sit and spend some quite time alone. Ellen m(2)
George Aldrich. She lived in East Providence, RI at the time of her
death, May 29, 1913.
Benjamin lived in Chelsea, Ma in 1855, where he worked in the
U. S. Marine Hospital. In June of 1860, just after being married at age 40,
Ben and Ellen lived in Burrillville, RI, in the same house with Jonathan Fish and
Ellen's sister Mary C. (Kimball) Fish (three of the Kimball sisters
married into the Fish family). Mary was 24 years old and Ellen was 21,
both were born in Ohio, and thier family had moved to Massachusetts
(where her father was originally from). Jonathan Fish, age 30, was
also originally from Andover, Massachusetts and may have been Benjamin's
cousin or nephew. Both men are listed as farmers, even though they own
no land. They lived next to farmer Edwin Smith. Smith owned $1600.00
in land, a large amount for the times and the area, and it is likely the
Fishes worked for him.
By 1870 Benjamin did own land, possibly the two family house he lived
in. By 1880 he had moved from Burrillville. His daughter Mary stayed
in Pascoag and worked as a Domestic Maid for a carpenter named Lupert
Salisbury and his family. Benjamin's sister Susan (Fish) Mowry, her husband Dennis and daughter
Omia, then 12 years old, lived in Harrisville, Rhode Island at that time
(1870). It was Susan that carried on the Family Bible, and the last
entry made in her own hand was the death record of her father Benjamin,
June 16, 1882. By the time Benjamin and Ellen's son George was born, they lived in the
Branch Village section of North Smithfield, Rhode Island and Benjamin
worked in a "flock mill", as did most of the men living near him.
Ben and Ellen's children included:
Mary L., b.~ 1861 in RI, worked as a maid in Pascoag when she was 19 years old.
Clara M., b.~ the 22nd of Feb 1862 in Burrillville, R.I.,
she died almost a year later on the 8th of February 1863 of Lung Fever.
Nettie, b.~ 1865 in RI.
Martha, b.~ 1868 m. to become Martha Waldron, lived on Greene St.
in Slatersville, RI at the time of her death at the age of
73 on Mar 21, 1941. She is buried in the Greene Street Cemetery. She
apparently left no children. Martha was said to have been born in
Douglas, MA, attended schools in Branch Village and later
worked in the Pascoag mills.
Benjamin C., Jr., b. Oct 16, 1871 in Burrillville, he died there
8 months later on June 24, 1872 of Dysentary.
+George Washington, born March 23, 1879 in Branch Village, North
Smithfield,RI
Annie B., also Anna B., born about 1869 in Rhode Island, married Amos
B. Gray, lived in East Providence at the time of her death. Died on
June 5th, year uncertain. probably about 1930. Children included four
sons and three daughters: Chester (lived in Rehoboth), Lester (lived
in Rehoboth), Arthur (lived in Providence), George (lived in Suffield, MA),
Ethel (m. to become Ethel Grocer, lived in East Providence),
Gertrude (m. to become Gertrude Johnson, lived in Providence),
and another daughter who married to become Mrs. Joseph Dias of Rehoboth.
Some records indicate a son Frank Fish, born about September 1857 in
Methuen, Massachusetts, that died in Burrillville, Rhode Island
September 1, 1862 of 'poisoned'.
George Washington Fish, born Mar. 23, 1879 in Branch Village, R.I.,
married Eva May Carter of Pascoag, Nov. 23, 1907. She was the daughter
of imigrants William and Naomi (Rich) Carter. Eva's parents lived in
Pascoag and were both from England. Eva died, apparently without
children, February 13, 1920 of exhaustion and anemia resulting from
hemorrhage from a malignant uterus. She was buried in the Pascoag
cemetery. George married secondly Ada May Hopkins, born in Foster,
R.I., daughter of Leward and Charlotte "Lottie" (Salisbury) Hopkins, May
14, 1890. They had four children.
