Elder John STRONG was born between 1606 and 1610 in Chard, Somerset, England. He died on 14 Apr 1699 in Northampton, Hampshire, MA (a). He arrived on the 'Mary and John' in 1630 (1 p.6) along with his (first) wife Margery, their two children and his sister, Eleanor. He was married to Abigail FORD before 1634. Abigail FORD was born on 18 Oct 1619 in Dorchester, England(a). ((c) says she was born in Bridport). She died on 6 July 1688 in Windsor, Hartford, CT. (a)

Gov. Caleb Strong states that John Strong at his death in 1699 was aged about 94, that is, born about 1605, but since John Strong the elder [father of "Elder John"} was not married until 1609, it is necessary to belive that the son was not born until about 1610, unless he was the child of a previous marriage. This also casts doubt on the idea that John Strong the third was born in 1626, as stated by Dwight. Mr. Albert Strong suggests that there is no reference for the birth of John Strong, 3rd, in 1626, and thinks it may have been later.
John Strong, the immigrant, married Margery the daughter of William Deane. He came to America on the "Mary and John," together with his wife, and two children, and his sister Eleanor. His wife is said to have died shortly after landing, together with the infant child, but the will of William Deane, written in 1634, mentions his daughter Margerie Strong, as though she were still living. Again Mr. Albert Strong suggests that her death may have occurred a few years after landing, rather than immediately. There is the thought, though, that her father may have believed that she was still living even after her death, as with communication what it must have been in those days, surely people might have been dead for months in New England before the relatives in the old country knew about it. However, this rather tends to disprove the statement made by Ebenezer Clap in his History of Dorchester that John Strong married Abigail ford in 1630. Undoubtedly it was later.
The tradition that John Strong came on the "Mary and John" has been contradicted so often, that it seems well to quote from an article by Rev. Sidney Strong, published April 5, 1934, in the Daily Hampshire Gazette, Northampton, Mass.:
Gov. Caleb Strong in 1777, when 32, near the death of his father, Lt. Caleb Strong, who had lived in Northampton, wrote an account of the family of John Strong.
Caleb Strong says that John Strong came in "Mary and John" in 1630. It should be kept well in mind that while Caleb Strong in his account might have made a mistake about names, or places; yet, about so conspicuous an event as the coming of the "Mary and John" with all the experiences surrounding it, the formation of the church, the sailing from England, etc., it would be impossible to have invented such an event in John Strong's life. Caleb Strong lived in Northampton on the same street his father and grandfathers clear back to John Strong had lived. This story filled the minds of these people and was told from generation to generation; one continuous family, living on one street, going to the same church.
There is also the witness of Esther Warham, daughter of John Warham and his second wife, Jane Newberry. John Warham's daughter Sarah married one of John Strong's sons, Return. Esther went to Northampton in 1658, the bride of Rev. Eleazer Mather. After his death, she married Dr. Solomon Stoddard. At the installation of Dr. Stoddard to the church, Elder Strong presided. For 71 years Esther served this one church as pastor's wife. She was one of the most remarkable women of her day, being the grandmother of Jonathan Edwards. Considering all these things it does not seem possible for Gov. Caleb Strong to have conceived the idea of John Strong being on the "Mary and John" unless it was a fact. There were people living in Northampton who could have corrected this statement, if it were not true. Hundreds of people living in Northampton at this time traced their ancestry back to the "Mary and John" group.
after the death of JOhn Strong's first wife, he married, probably beofre 1635, Abigail Ford, born Oct 8, 1619, died July 6, 1688. IN 1635, John Strong was at Hingham, Mass. IN 1638, he was an inhabitant of Taunton, and he was Representative of Taunton at General Court in 1641-43-44. He removed to Northampton in 1659, where he became the first ruling elder of the Northampton Church. Jerijah Strong, the son of Elder John Strong, states that his father died April 13, 1699, in the 92nd year of his age.

"A great deal has been written about the date of Abigail Ford's marriage to John Strong. In the History of Dorchester, by Ebenezer Clap, published in 1859, her marriage date was given as 1630, and this has been a stumbling block to genealogists ever since, as she would have been but eleven years old at the time. However her first child is said to have been born in 1633, so the marraige date may have been a little later. At the same time, there are many records of girls who married at twelve that are accepted without question. For instance, Sarah Griswold, born in 1638, married Samuel Phelps in 1650. Also Mary Merwin, born 1666, married Joseph Hull in 1676."
