Plano Therapeutic Services was started in 1982, by therapists who believed that children with sensory motor disorders and speech/language disorders would benefit from having services available to them in Plano. The clinic is dedicated to serving the needs of children from birth to approximately age twelve with a wide range of diagnoses that include; sensory integration disorders (including sensory defensiveness and modulation disorders); fine motor deficits; coordination disorder; dysgraphia; autism spectrum disorders; and other developmental delays. Each Occupational Therapist is certified in the administration and interpretation of the Sensory Integration and Praxis Tests (SIPT).

When starting occupational therapy, an intake interview is conducted with the child's parents that covers problems that the child is having, the child's developmental history, and the child's sensory and motor history. An evaluation plan is then developed for the child that might include standardized assessments and clinical observations of his motor skills, sensory processing abilities, functional skills, and self care skills. Specific occupational therapy goals are then developed for each child with the primary goal always being to maximize the child's functional skills and independence. Each child is seen in a one-to-one therapy session in an individual treatment or gym area.

The focus of therapy is not only to master the developmental functional goals set for each child, but to work with the parents as well. A conference is held with the child's parents to discuss the evaluation results and outline the goals for therapy, and to provide the parents with information and resources about sensory integration disorders, and discusses the impact that the child's sensory processing problems have on all areas of his or her life. Parents have the opportunity to talk with the therapist after each therapy session, and are able to observe therapy sessions, where appropriate.
