TomGuy's Camcorder Mount

If you read Wing World you may recall the July 1997 issue, in which Tom Guy's great home made cam corder mount for the Wing was illustrated. Recently there has been some fresh discussion on the "Wings On The Internet" discussion group about mounts, so I figured I'd dig around and put these up again. Besides, Tom was kind enough in his article to reference Texas Wingz so it's the least I can do. So, without any further delays here they are. If you have any questions about the mount, you can contact Tom directly. You might also want to let Tom know what you think.

Camcorder Mount

Don't throw away those old highway board mounts. If you like taking unique angle camcorder shots from your Wing, here are a couple of mounts that can easily be made for mounting a camcorder on your Wing. The mounts can be attached to either side of your bike for a different perspective shooting angle and are easy to make and install.

One mount was made for the price of a bolt to fit in the tri-pod of your camcorder. The other mount cost less than $15.00 (cdn$).

The first model (pictures #1,2, & 3 below) has been designed for the GL-1000, GL-1100 and GL-1200 engine guards. You will have to file the small platic tit (tete?) on the camcorder holder plate which will then allow you to aim the camera horizontally. The highway board clamp will allow you to tilt the camera up or down. The camcorder holder plate is the plate that holds the camcorder is not so long as to damage the camcorder.

The second model (pictures #4,5,6, & 7 below) was manufactured from stock aluminum purchased from any local stock metal provider. All edges were de-burred and rounded off with a file. You may wish to glue a rubber mat to the mounting plate to go between the mounting plate and the camcorder.

Best results will be obtained with a 'steady shot' type of camcorder to help reduce any jiggles.

Be sure to use an ND (Neutral Densiity) filter over top of your cancorder lens to protect the camcorder lens from stone chips, bugs, etc.

Attach a safety strap to the camcorder so that if it vibrates loose and falls off, it will not hit the pavement.

Remember your safety is more important than the video you are recording. (TomGuy)

Note: I have left the images fairly large so you can see the details of Tom's design and how it works.
