Description of a Typical Kundalini Yoga Class:

Classes are taught in the tradition of the 3HO foundation.

A class begins with an opening mantra which enables students to tune into their higher selves to prepare to get maximum benefit out of the class. By mentally preparing one's self, the exercises can be done with a calm, relaxed mind free from distraction.

Next a set of warm up exercises is done to loosen up the muscles and get the "juices flowing."

The main part of the class is devoted to a kriya or specially arranged set of yoga exercises specifically designed to work on a particular system of the body or mind. For example, a kriya might work on general flexibility, abdominal strengthening or emotional stability.

A relaxation period follows the kriya, at which time students lie on their back with their eyes closed, listening to soft music, completely relaxed, allowing the work they've just completed to "soak in".

The work the body has performed in doing the kriya helps to put one into an optimal emotional and mental state so that the meditation which follows will have maximum benefit.

The meditation uses mantras (sounds, usually from ancient Sanskrit), mudras (hand positions) and special breathing techniques to help one focus, cut out distractions and achieve a meditative state.

The yoga session then ends with the classic 3HO Sunshine Song to send off the participants with feelings of peace, strength and joy.

Instructor Bio:

By Elizabeth Webb,
Kundalini Yoga Teacher

My first exposure to yoga was in 1978 in Madison, Wisconsin at the 3HO Ashram. I had seen classes advertised at the Food Cooperative and decided to try them out. I immediately fell in love with the power and beauty of this wonderful art. Kundalini yoga classes provided a challenging workout with incredible mental and emotional benefits. My teachers were American seikhs: kind, knowledgeable people with dedication, diligence and wisdom. Although I've never adopted the Seikh way of life, I have a deep respect for it and use many of the principles they teach to enhance my daily life.

After 2 years, I opted to take Shotokan karate classes (click for Bio) instead of yoga; the class times were in direct conflict. So I practiced yoga on my own.

In 1993 I attended a karate summer camp in South Carolina. The instructor, Toru Shomoji really worked on "back to the basics", and the early morning sessions were on posture and breathing. This wonderful training rekindled my desire to get back to my yoga training. Yoga can especially help breathing deeply from the diaphragm and relaxation of the upper body for karate practice.

In 1993 I began taking classes with Swami Dev Singh Khalsa in Dallas. I continue to this day. Swami Dev is a wonderful, knowledgeable Kundalini Yoga devotee. I very much enjoy studying with him.

I began teaching yoga in 2000 at the Campbell Green Recreation Center. I retired from CGRC in November, 2001 before I delivered my twin daughters New Years Day, 2002.

I started up classes again in March, 2002 at our Karate Dojo. Its a comfortable place for classes, a big open room with nice soft lighting.

Teaching has always been my art. Kundalini Yoga classes are enjoyable, effective, and uplifting. Please try one out; beginners are always welcome. Workouts are customized towards the individual.
